Akhnaten - ENO Description

A hypnotically beautiful work, inspired by mystical texts from ancient Egypt, Akhnaten is a modern masterpiece opera from composer Philip Glass. Glass weaves prayers in Akkadian and Egyptian Hebrew into the music, creating an otherworldly atmosphere which is completely unique in the world of classical music. The melodies and structure are minimalist, in classic Glass fashion, and they are accompanied by dazzling rhythmic dancing which perfectly fits the pace and feel of the melodies.

This production of Akhnaten will be staged at the English National Opera from 11 February until 7 March 2019 and is directed by Phelim McDermott. When it first appeared in 2016, McDermott's production won numerous garlands, including a prestigious Olivier Award, and he has brought back his winning team to make 2019's run just as memorable.

The orchestra will be conducted by Glass expert Karen Kamensek, ensuring a faithful rendition of the original work, while the lead role will be filled by Anthony Roth Costanzo. Join him as he tells the story of the Egyptian pharoah Akhnaten - who sought to create a monotheistic religion for the very first time. In Glass' hands, the tale is a cautionary parable about violence and power, and this production will be an unforgettable experience.
