Family musicals

All members of the family can enjoy a musical show in London. These are some of the best family friendly musicals playing at the moment:

• Disney’s Aladdin features all of the songs from the classic film and over 350 extravagant costumes.
• The Lion King, another Disney favourite, features songs by Elton John, as well as amazing choreography and puppetry.
• Roald Dahl fans are well catered for in the form of Matilda, with songs written by the comedian Tim Minchin. 
• Wicked, the story of the Witches of Oz, is a longstanding children’s (and adults) favourite. It has been playing in London since 2006 to packed out audiences.

Adult musicals

Musicals aren’t just for children though – there are plenty of shows more suitable for adults. Here are some of the best ones playing right now in London:

• The Book of Mormon is a rude but very funny satire about Mormon beliefs and practices from the creators of South Park.
• More tasteful is the classic show The Phantom of the Opera, featuring the famous song The Music of the Night. It has been running in London since 1986.
• Les Miserables is a musical set during the French Revolution, telling the story of Jean Valjean, breaking his parole and agreeing to look after the daughter of a factory worker, making them change their lives forever.

Matinees and Evening Shows

With all of London’s major musicals offering both matinees and evening shows, you’ll have no problem fitting a show into your schedule. Most shows have mid-afternoon matinees twice a week, including Saturday shows. Going for a musical’s evening show will normally give you a wider range of days to choose from. While midweek matinees can be a great way to get tickets to some of the West End’s most popular musicals.
