Follies Description

Relive the golden age of vaudeville by joining the 37-member cast for Follies, at the National Theatre. Created by stage legend Stephen Sondheim, Follies is returning for a second run after a triumphant initial outing which earned its cast an Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival. And this time around, expect the same blend of drama, timeless tunes, and first-class acting.

The story takes audiences back to New York in 1971, where a troupe of Follies showgirls prepare for the final performance at the Weismann Theatre. With the theatre scheduled to be demolished the very next day, the dancers and singers reminisce about their past glories and the passing of time as they struggle to come to terms with the end of an era.

In the process, they come up with some outstanding tunes, including Losing My Mind, Broadway Baby, and I'm Still Here. It's a series of showstoppers for the final show of their careers.

This production is helmed by Dominic Cooke, who won praise for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Cooke has gathered together a huge cast of 37 stage performers and a pit orchestra, creating a period feel that brings to life Sondheim's affectionate vision of a dying art form.
