Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake Description

Matthews Bourne's retelling of Tchaikovsky's masterpiece Swan Lake, has become a classic ballet of its own right. Premiering at Sadler's Wells Theatre in 1995, it broke all the rules, gave the story a modern-day twist, and took the dance world by storm. It has been delighting audiences in the UK and all over the world ever since.

This tragic tale of romance, magic, and deception has been given a psychological makeover, exploring themes of repression, family, prejudice, and the power of love. In Bourne's production the female corps de ballet has been replaced with menacing male dancers, and the Swan Princess has become a male swan instead.

Along with Bourne's funny and spectacular choreography, Lez Brotherston's set design helps to create a glorious, contemporary Swan Lake. This adaption has been collecting awards for over twenty years, with over 30 international awards and three Tony Awards.

Today Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake is the longest-running ballet in the West End as well as on Broadway, and has also enjoyed a number of UK and World tours. Back on stage at Sadler's Wells, Matthews Bourne's Swan Lake is a modern-day classic that has been given another terrific makeover for the 21st century. It is a definite must-see
