While an iconic sight familiar to many from pictures and films such as James Bond and Harry Potter, seeing the bridge itself is something quite different. It's even more special if you're lucky enough to see it rise majestically, letting a boat sail through.
The Monument stands at the junction of Monument Street and Fish Street Hill in the City Of London. It was built between 1671 and 1677 to commemorate the Great Fire of London and to celebrate the rebuilding of the City. Constructed from steel and brick in Victorian Gothic style, the bridge was officially opened by the future King Edward VII on the 30th June 1894. It is the most instantly recognisable bridge in Britain and possibly one of the most photographed bridges in the world.
With Tower Bridge tickets, discover all the facts and figures behind its construction in the Exhibition Rooms while in the Victorian Engine Rooms see coal-driven steam engines that once powered the raising of the bridge. Interactive displays bring alive the noise and smell created by the steam engines when they were working at full power.
Climb to the glass walkways high above the road and river for a fascinating perspective on the sights of London while a mere 42 metres below boats pass under the bridge and traffic crosses it. Look out for the Tower of London, HMS Belfast, the Monument and St Katherine's Dock. The Great Bridges of the World Exhibition in the East Walkway takes you on a journey to the world's other historic bridges such as San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge.
