When did Madam Tussauds open?

The attraction first opened over 200 years ago after Madame Tussaud inherited Dr Philippe Curtius’ wax exhibition, following his death in 1794. An apprentice of Curtius since the age of 6, Madame Tussaud created her first wax sculpture in 1777 of Voltaire and later became the art tutor to King Louis XVI of France’s sister, Madame Elizabeth, at the Palace of Versailles. She escaped execution during the French Revolution and created death masks of many prominent victims which were paraded as revolutionary symbols. She travelled around Europe for the next 33 years with her exhibition and London became its first permanent home in 1836.

One of the first exhibitions in the new Baker Street museum was Madame Tussauds Chamber of Horrors, which thrilled visitors with its newly created figures of murderers and other criminals. You can still see some of these creations today in the history section of Madame Tussauds London.

The collection expanded when the first overseas branch of Madame Tussauds was opened in Amsterdam in 1970. Madame Tussauds Blackpool opened in 2011 when the attraction celebrated its 250th anniversary, and the first branch in India launched in New Delhi in 2017.
