Stade de France

Originally built for the 1998 FIFA World Cup, the Stade de France is the country’s national stadium, hosting some of the world’s premier sporting events and biggest music acts, and surrounded by great eateries and hotels.

Based in the Saint-Denis area just north of Paris, the Stade de France is one of the most important arenas in the world today. This huge venue was made famous during France’s triumphant win against Brazil in the 1998 World Cup, and today it hosts Champion League Final matches, world championships of track and field events, and the Rugby World Cup.

But it’s not just a premier sporting venue. Many music acts have played there in recent years including The Rolling Stones, Rihanna, Madonna and Muse. But, if your main reason for visiting is to see this famous arena for its sporting legacy, be sure to catch one of the guided tours taking you up to the edge of the pitch and giving you a privileged glimpse at the players’ changing rooms.

The Saint-Denis area is easily reached by the Metro from Paris’ city centre, and there’s lots to see and do in the area while you’re visiting the Stade de France.

History and art fans will be wowed by the stunning Basilica Cathedral of Saint-Denis just down the road. This gorgeous cathedral was first built in the 12th century and marked an important destination for pilgrims for centuries. Today, it’s regarded as the first Gothic church ever built, and is a breathtaking example of French Gothic design.

If you’re looking for something slightly different, why not make a trip to the Star Wars Identities museum close by, and spend some time browsing the original props and a great selection of replicas inside.
