Located on the largest of the Dodecanese Islands, the Greek city of Rhodes is a popular beach resort. Here, visitors can explore ancient castles and churches and retrace the footsteps of the Knights of St John who commandeered the island during the Crusades. Rhodes is the oldest European medieval town which is still inhabited and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. The city features a warm, sunny climate all year round and plenty of spa hotels and resorts to enjoy.
The Collusus was probably the city's most popular landmark attraction during ancient times. Dating back to 280 BC, it is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world although today only descriptions remain. In the Old Town, you can explore mosques, medieval buildings, fountains, Byzantine and Gothic churches, restaurants and shops. Ancient buildings form part of the Old Town, and it is here where you glimpse a snapshot of the medieval Street of the Knights and the Palace of the Grand Masters, which today houses a history museum. In the harbour area, you can buy colourful sea shells. Landmarks are accessible by car, bus or on foot.
The Collusus was a statue of Helios, the Greek god of the sun, that was built by Chares of Lindos in 280 BC. The statue measured 108 feet high and is one of the tallest ancient statues ever built. It was constructed to honour the town's victory over Antigonus I. It was destroyed by an earthquake in 226 BC and was never rebuilt.
There are numerous pristine and beautiful beaches in the region. Faliraki is well known for its beaches and nightlife, and on Kolymbia you will find water parks for the whole family to enjoy. At Lindos, you will find Rhodes' cliff top Acropolis and the Temple of Athena. At the beach resort of Kallithea, you can laze on the sand, taste the nightlife and relax in hot springs.
The Aquarium View Hotel offers sea views and is located near Elli beach on the northernmost tip of Rhodes island close to Rhodes town. The Spirit of the Knights Boutique Hotel is a small 4-star hotel with a cosy atmosphere located in a medieval building built by the Christian crusaders. The Kiotari Beach Mitsis Rodos Maris Resort and Spa offers large swimming pools and is located on the Mediterranean Sea.
