The Greek island of Rhodes can be found close to the coast of Turkey in the Aegean Sea. This sunny destination offers a Medieval old town, an ancient acropolis, lively beaches, family resorts and traditional sleepy villages.
The Old Town of Rhodes is a tangle of cobbled streets, pretty squares and arched entrances. Spending time inside the ancient walls of the biggest medieval town in Europe is a must for all visitors to the island. To enjoy some of the nature Rhodes has on offer, hikes around the Seven Springs or Epta Piges area take walkers through cool tunnels, shallow rivers and green forests. There are ruins to tour on the west coast at Kamiros, a quiet and well-preserved city built around 7BC, and towards the centre of the island, the Valley of the Butterflies is popular with families. Here, colourful moths can be spotted in this cool, shady oasis that is lovely to visit when the weather is hot.
Climb the steep hill and be rewarded by wide views and an acropolis dedicated to the goddess Athena. The spectacular ruins are explained by well-written signs so visitors can understand the history of the place and the restoration work being carried out. A top tip is to visit the Acropolis early in the day to avoid the heat. After spending time at the top, walk down to Lindos village where tiny shops sell souvenirs and restaurants serve traditional Greek cuisine.
Rhodes has a choice of beaches, so choose the perfect one for you. Faliraki Beach is sandy, lively and backed by tavernas, takeaways and souvenir shops. A windy pebble beach perfect for windsurfing is Lalyssos in the north of the island. Tsambika Beach is arguably the prettiest and has a thick line of trees along the back. For a quiet stretch of sand, head to Afandou beach, which offers a few sun loungers and very little more.
The best 5 star hotels in Rhodes are located along the east coast of this Greek island. The Atrium Palace has every luxury such as a full-service spa, air-conditioning, three restaurants and 24-hour room service. An adults-only option is the Esperos Village which comes with its own private beach and two lagoon pools. Hotel Rodos Palladium offers a half board package with a beachfront location that's hard to beat.
