Trains

An historically important railway station due to its strategic location approximately midway between London and Edinburgh, York railway station dates back to 1839 when a temporary wooden structure was built outside the walls of the city on Queen Street. In 1841 a station was built inside the walls of the city, in turn replaced by the current station in 1877. With 13 platforms, this was the largest station in the world at the time. York railway station was heavily bombed during the Second World War and was extensively renovated in 1947.

History

For a historical shopping experience, The Shambles are a must-see. Taking its name from the Anglo-Saxon word for ‘slaughterhouse’, the area was once famous for its butcher shops. In the period since then, the area was developed with overhanging 15th-century Tudor buildings. For something a little more contemporary, York also boasts an impressive array of shops, restaurants, pubs and nightclubs. The city offers an enormous selection of British and international restaurants, while Coppergate Shopping Centre is perfect for some retail therapy.
