Norfolk is perhaps best known for the Norfolk Broads, a network of rivers and lakes with National Park status. It also has some of the UK's best beaches, some of which are also National Parks.  Norwich is the largest city but it's also home to bustling resorts like Great Yarmouth and Cromer.

It is studded with pretty market towns, medieval churches and historic homes like Sandringham House, and family attractions include Great Yarmouth Sea Life Centre and Banham Zoo.

Things to see and do

Explore Norwich, the capital of Norfolk, with its medieval cathedral and cloisters, Norman castle and museum. Wander along cobbled Elm Street and take in a traditional tea room. Find out why the city is one of the UK's top ten shopping destinations. Great Yarmouth boasts two piers, one of which has one of the few end-of-the-pier theatres left in Britain. Attractions include the Sea Life Centre and the Golden Mile seafront with its long, sandy beaches and amusement arcades.

Another popular resort is Cromer which has wide, open beaches and lots of independent shops, great for browsing. Kings Lynn offers a mixture of historic attractions. It's also good for shopping.

There are lots of great ways of exploring Norfolk. Hop on the Mid-Norfolk railway, East Anglia's largest heritage railway, which runs between Wymondham and Dereham market towns. Hire a day boat and cruise the Broads. Hire a bicycle and take one of the designated cycle trails. Or get up close and personal with wildlife at one of the many outstandingly beautiful coastal bird reserves.

Arts and culture

Head to the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts for a fine collection of modern art. The Norwich Playhouse offers a varied programme of theatre, comedy, dance and musicals. Norwich also has four cinemas.

Eating and drinking

Some of the finest wining and dining can be found in Norwich which is home to Roger Hickman's, the only restaurant in the city with three AA rosettes. Or try Tatlers, a mainstay in the city's culinary scene, or the Assembly House, a Grade I listed Georgian house. Sample seafood at Cromer and Great Yarmouth, while Norfolk also has many terrific old pubs such as The Murderers in Norwich.

Nightlife

Norwich's thriving music scene can be enjoyed at venues including the Norwich Arts Centre, The Waterfront and the University of East Anglia. For nightclubs try Mercy XS and The Waterfront.
