Crossing the River Thames between Vauxhall and Pimlico, Vauxhall Bridge is one of the most recognisable bridges in London, just a short walk from the Tate Britain and Oval Cricket Ground.
The current Vauxhall Bridge is a Grade II listed steel and granite deck arch bridge, which first opened in 1906. Before 1906 there was the Regent Bridge, built at the beginning of the 19th century, and before this there was a regular ferry crossing across the river. The current bridge features bronze statues designed by Alfred Drury, George Frampton and Frederick Pomeroy. Now one of the city’s major transport links, the bridge carries the A202 across the Thames.
On the north bank of the River Thames is Pimlico, a small but wealthy area of London that boasts impressive Regency architecture. If you carry on the A202 from Vauxhall Bridge through Pimlico you’ll soon reach Victoria railway station, where you can find the grand Westminster Cathedral as well as a number of pubs and cafés. And if you continue along the riverbank, you’ll find the Tate Britain with its world-famous collection of British art.
On the south side of the River Thames is Vauxhall, part of the borough of Lambeth. Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens greets you on your left-hand-side after leaving Vauxhall Bridge, and if you walk further along the A202 you’ll reach the Oval Cricket Ground and Kennington Park. If you decide to stick close to the bank of the river, a few minutes on foot will take you to St Thomas’ Hospital and Westminster Bridge.
