Sightseeing in Tywyn

The town is well known throughout Wales for the Cadfan Stone, the oldest surviving example of the ancient written Welsh language. It dates back to the eighth or ninth century.

You can discover the stone inside St Cadfan's church, which is documented as far back as the tenth century. The Romanesque architecture is something else to admire as you wander around.

The Narrow Gauge Railway Museum is based in Tywyn, where the old Talyllyn Railway line ends. It contains over 1,000 artefacts from the heyday of the steam railway.

Cardigan Bay

The bay is Wales' largest, stretching through Gwynedd and Pembrokeshire. In its heyday, at the start of the 19th century, it was a more important Welsh port than Cardiff. The Cardigan Bay area includes other popular Welsh resorts, like Aberystwyth.

The Cardigan Bay Special Area of Conservation covers a large area, protecting the local wildlife and plants.

See the area's marine life on a trip along the Ceredigion Coast Path. It's split into sections, passing through Tywyn on the path from Aberdovey to Llwyngwril. The bay has the biggest populations of bottlenose dolphins and grey seals in the UK.

Exploring Snowdonia

With Tywyn rail station in the middle of town, it's easy to get out to Porthmadog and Pwllheli. Some trains run as far as Birmingham International for the airport.

Snowdonia was the first Welsh National Park, designated in 1951, and Mount Snowdon's peak is also the highest point in Wales. Tywyn is right on the edge of the park's south side.

The area is ideal for adventure holidays and outdoor activities with all the family. Try some mountain biking or watersports if you're in an active mood, or have a go at horse riding and bird watching along one of the clearly marked routes.
