History and culture

At one time Burton-on-Trent was regarded as one of Britain's major brewing capitals, with a quarter of all the beer consumed in the UK made in the surrounding area. In excess of 30 companies were brewing beer in Burton by the second half of the 19th century. You can find out how and why the industry thrived in the town by visiting The National Brewery Centre on Horninglow Street.

The Brewhouse Arts Centre on Union Street is a major centre for culture in the town and is the place to go for everything from cinema and theatre to dance and art. Catch the latest exhibition or simply stop by for a drink and a bite in the café bar.

Set in 150 acres of maturing woodland to the south of the town centre is the National Memorial Arboretum. Planting began at the site in 1997 and it now exists as a living centre of remembrance, dedicated to both military and civilian individuals who served the nation.

Fun and fresh air

Situated just to the west of the town is the National Forest Adventure Farm, a great family attraction where youngsters can get involved with petting and feeding animals, and enjoy a variety of indoor and outdoor activities. Perhaps enjoy a walk in the fresh air at Stapenhill Gardens, close to the River Trent, or at Branston Water Park, the site of a disused gravel pit.

Shopping

If you're spending a few days at one of the hotels in Burton-on-Trent, be sure to find time to make the most of the town's retail centre. Independent businesses and chain stores can be found across the pedestrianised zone. There are also numerous indoor retail sites too, including Burton Place, the Octagon Shopping Centre, Coopers Square and Middleway Retail Park.

Eating and drinking

There's so much to see and do around Burton-on-Trent that you'll no doubt be glad of the opportunity to relax and refuel at the town's excellent restaurants. Traditional pubs serving superb food and a wide range of ales can be found throughout the area. Consider The Bell Inn, The Red Lion and The Cock Inn to start with.

Little India in Barton-under-Needwood is only a short distance by car from the town centre and well worth a visit if you enjoy traditional Indian dishes. Back in Burton-on-Trent, Favourite Thai is a reliable option for authentic Thai food and a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Visit Pascal at the Old Vicarage for an evening of fine dining. Expect a great selection of modern English dishes with a French influence.
