Away from the sand and seafront there is lots to explore, including a landscape that ranges from pine-covered mountains, to waterfalls and lush sub-tropical vegetation. Join a walking tour and trek around volcanoes on the Isla Graciosa. Take a camel ride, or treat yourself to some serious pampering at a spa. Learn to scuba dive and search for shipwrecks or raise your adrenalin levels with paragliding.
Arts and culture
Wander through the Triana district in Las Palmas and discover pretty Art Nouveau and Art Deco buildings. Stop off at the Nestor Museum, dedicated to the artist Nestor Martin-Fernandez de la Torre. Located midway between Vegueta and Las Canteras, the venue features the eight-panelled Poem of the Sea.
Other art galleries include the Centre de Arte Canario in La Oliva which features a sculpture garden and galleries of work by local artists including Cesar Manrique, Ruben Dario and Alberto Agullo. Two galleries are dedicated to the watercolours of the award-winning Alberto Manrique.
Make sure you don’t miss the Canaries' most important art gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art, housed in an 18th-century castle which includes work by Miro, Rivera, Sempere and Tapies.
Take in an opera or a classical music concert at the spectacular Auditorium which lies by the sea in Santa Cruz, and is the home of the Santa Cruz Symphony Orchestra and the Tenerife Opera Festival.
Things to see and do
Join a guided three-hour hike through the rugged Los Volcanes National Park with its sub-tropical forests and waterfalls. Put your foot to the pedal and mountain bike on La Graciosa, and try your hand at a range of water sports including surfing and windsurfing at Playa de Famara on Lanzarote, Playa de Sotavento on Fuerteventura and Pozo Inquierdo on Gran Canaria. The sea around the Canary Islands is also ideal for snorkelling and diving. There are even some wrecks to investigate off of Las Palmas.
Eating and drinking
Typical Canarian cuisine includes simple grilled meat and fish dishes with vegetable and salad and tapas. For local cuisine with a twist, head to Restaurante Don Din 2 in Tigaday, while for fresh seafood, sample Bar-Restaurante El Puerto in Valle Gran Rey, which offers great value for money.
Sip a cocktail, chill out and enjoy sea views at Olympia in Morro Jable or, for something a bit livelier, the Rock Music Bar in Correlejo has acoustic music nightly, and is very popular.
Ococo in Arrecife has sports TV, pool tables and darts, and hosts a disco on Friday and Saturday evenings. Alternatively, for a proper 'knight' on the town, go to the medieval-themed Camelot, which features banks of TVs showing music videos together with live DJs. The venue also hosts live concerts. For good jazz, make a beeline for Jazzissimo in Los Cristianos, which was opened by John Dankworth.
For handicrafts, a good bet is the Fedac market on Playa de Ingles on Maspalomas, or browse the Rastro flea market in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
