Hotels in Zakopane

Close to the Slovakian border, the breathtaking Polish town of Zakopane is a favoured winter sports destination overlooked by the striking Tatra Mountains, part of the vast Carpathian Mountains. The town is noted for its unique Zakopane Style architecture, which comprises large, picturesque chalets modelled on the Vernacular architecture of the Carpathians, based on wood and clay.

This settlement has been inhabited for approximately four centuries, and was renowned for its pioneering hydro-therapeutic institutions by the 1870s.

The Villa Atma

The perfect example of this architectural style is the Villa Atma, which was originally built in the late 19th century and was expanded after the First World War. The building became a museum in 1976, and exhibits the life of Karol Szymanowski, one of Poland's most influential composers.

The mountain of Guba?ówka

1,126m high, Guba?ówka offers remarkable panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, and is best visited between late spring and early autumn, when weather conditions are somewhat more favourable (unless you're participating in winter sports). You can also take the Guba?ówka Hill Funicular, which has operated since the 1930s and transports passengers from the Zakopane base station all the way to the summit.

The Kasprowy Wierch cable car

Another great way to enjoy the spectacular natural scenery, the Kasprowy Wierch cable car carries passengers all the way to the summit of Mount Kasprowy, which is almost 2,000m high. The journey, which only takes around 10 minutes, enables visitors to witness extraordinary vistas of the High Tatras and climb to a meteorological observatory, which is claimed to be Poland's highest building.

Further afield: The resort town of Szczawnica

Also popular with many winter sports enthusiasts, Szczawnica became an exclusive spa resort by the 19th century and is known for its relatively warm micro-climate, thanks to its sheltered location in the dramatic Grajcarek valley. The most iconic landmark here is the Uzdrowiskowe Museum, which contains hundreds of artefacts related to the town's spa heritage and information on the therapies that have been practised here over the years.

Eating out in Zakopane – recommendations

If you're a fan of delicious Polish dishes, you might want to try the Tuberoza restaurant, or visit the Casia Mia restaurant for some wonderful Italian and international cuisine. Other highly rated local-themed restaurants include the Bakowo-Zohylina-Niznio, Restauracja Regionalna, Dobra Kasza Nasza, and Gazdowo Kuznia.

Hotel suggestions

The Willa Helan is one of the most affordable Zakopane hotels and is revered for its hospitality. The Tatra Chalet and Grand Hotel Stamary, meanwhile, also provide very good value for money and comforSEOSITE_LEVEL_DESCRIPTION furnishings, while the Belvedere Hotel is one of the most deluxe places to stay in the town.
