Hotels in Workington

A town with a profound industrial legacy and almost 2,000 years of history, Workington has benefited from millions of pounds of regeneration in recent years, and is a fantastic base for exploring Cumbria's breathtaking natural scenery.

In the Georgian era, this town became a bustling coal- and iron-producing centre, and also thrived as a commercial port and steel centre in later years. Workington is also very close to the Lake District National Park, which contains the highest mountains in England and has been an inspiration for many prominent literary figures and artists over the years.

The Helena Thompson Museum

In the splendid Georgian building originally named Park End House, the Helena Thompson Museum was sold to the public in 1940 and contains several galleries exhibiting the history of the Thompson family, who lived here for almost 200 years. Here, you can also learn about the Georgian and Victorian way of life, and the evolution of Workington's industries in the Industrial Revolution.

Workington Hall

Also known as Curwen Hall, Workington Hall is more than 600 years old, although the building suffered extensive damage during the Second World War. The landmark, now protected as a Grade I-listed building, was where Mary, Queen of Scots, spent a night in May 1568 as she escaped the Battle of Langside and ventured southwards beyond the English border.
