Hotels in Woking

From beautiful landscaped gardens to bustling shopping centres, Woking hotels offer access to the charms of this picturesque Surrey town, and are within easy reach of theme parks, the Surrey Hills and central London.

Culture and shopping

Woking is home to one of the best cultural centres in the southeast of England outside of London, The Lightbox. Designed by the same architects behind the London Eye, The Lightbox hosts various performances and exhibitions as well as Woking's Story, an interactive journey through Woking's rich heritage. Culture lovers will also want to check out The Ambassadors, an excellent cinema with a number of screens showing the latest films.

If you're planning on indulging in a spot of retail therapy, Woking Town Centre features a fantastic array of shopping malls and high street shops, along with a number of smaller boutique outlets. The Peacocks and Wolsey Place are the two largest shopping centres in the area, and Market Walk is a covered street with stalls selling artisan cakes, fresh local produce, colourful flowers and delicious Belgian waffles. There are also plenty of cafés, restaurants and bars dotted throughout Woking.

History

Woking has a history that reaches back to the Domesday Book. The remains of Woking Palace can be found on the outskirts of the town, close to the village of Old Woking. Henry VII built the palace from an earlier house in 1503 and both Henry VIII and Elizabeth I remodelled it during their reigns. Little survives today of the palace but it is nevertheless a pleasant place to spend and hour or two. Another important historical area in Woking is Brookwood Cemetery, the largest cemetery in the UK. The cemetery is where you'll find the Brookwood Military Cemetery with 1,601 Commonwealth burials from WWI and 3,476 from WWII. Woking is also home to Shah Jahan Mosque, the first purpose-built mosque in the United Kingdom.

Further afield

Woking is within easy driving distance of both Thorpe Park and Chessington World of Adventures. These theme parks are two of the most famous in the country and an excellent destination if you're travelling with kids in tow. A short drive south from Woking is the county town of Guildford, surrounded by a number of historical country homes including the 18th-century Clandon Park and the 16th-century Loseley Park. South of Guildford lie the Surrey Hills, deemed an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and an ideal location for countryside walks.
