Hotels in Wincanton

Situated in a small town in south Somerset, Wincanton hotels are a great base for exploring the tearooms, boutique shops and cosy pubs of this quiet leafy town.

Discworld

Wincanton is twinned with Ankh-Morpork, the fictional capital city in Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels. Head to the Discworld Emporium and you'll be able to buy a variety of Discworld jewellery, posters, stamps, games and passports. The Emporium is a must-see for fans of the universe of Terry Pratchett's novels.

Racecourse

A popular draw to Wincanton is the Wincanton Racecourse, a Thoroughbred horseracing venue owned by Jockey Club Racecourses. As well as the track, Wincanton Racecourse has a restaurant serving mouthwatering British cuisine.

Shopping, food and drink

Wincanton has a charming selection of independent shops to poke around in. From vintage clothes to antique furniture, there are plenty of interesting items on sale and you could very easily spend a good part of the day drifting from one shop front to another. After satisfying your itch for retail therapy, head to one of the traditional restaurants and pubs dotted throughout the town, all serving delicious meals and locally brewed real ale.

Further afield

With 218 listed buildings and a heritage reaching back to the Roman occupation, Shepton Mallet is a town with a rich history. The market cross that marks the town centre dates from the 16th century and is close to The Shambles, a medieval market stall. Throughout the town there are examples of a range of architectural styles, including the Palladian style Old Bowlish House that dates from 1720 and the Grade II-listed Anglo-Bavarian Brewery.

A short journey northwest of Shepton Mallet will take you to Wells, home of Wells Cathedral. The current cathedral dates from between 1175 to 1490 although it is built on the site of an earlier church dating from 705AD. The cathedral is one of the finest medieval cathedrals in England and an excellent example of Gothic architecture.
