Hotels in Wicklow
Nestled in a popular coastal town to the south of Dublin, Wicklow hotels are within easy reach of ancient buildings, sublime natural landscapes and an array of welcoming Irish pubs.
Wicklow Town was founded by Vikings in the mid-9th century and is today home to a variety of shops, restaurants and pubs. One of the most interesting parts of the town is Wicklow's Historic Gaol, a jail that opened in 1702 and was known throughout Ireland for the brutality of its jail keepers. Visitor's can travel back in time and meet actors dressed in period costume and look through a number of fascinating exhibitions detailing the history of the prison. The prison includes a grisly dungeon and a range of gruesome torture instruments, as well as an exhibition on the connection of the prison to the convicts sent to Australia.
The coast of County Wicklow is a fantastic place for both short strolls and longer treks. There are walking routes here for all ages and levels of ability. Head south along the coast from Wicklow Town and you'll come across the town of Arklow. As well as a number of shops and pubs, Arlow is home to an interesting Maritime Museum detailing the longstanding connection of the area to the sea. To the north of Wicklow Town is Bray, home to the National Sealife Centre – a great destination if you're travelling with kids in town, featuring a selection of over 70 different sea and freshwater species of animal.
One of the main pulls to Wicklow County is the Wicklow Mountains. These vast mountains are ideal for walking trips and there are plenty of routes to follow, whether you're travelling with young kids or are looking for more of a challenge. The highest peak is Lugnaquilla, at 925m, but there are plenty of other areas of interest. The beautiful Powerscourt Waterfall is on the Enniskerry & Powerscourt Estate, and the mysterious and prehistoric Deer Stone can be found in Glendalough. The Wicklow Mountains also boast some impressive historical buildings, including the 11th-century Reefert Church close to the Upper Lake area and the ruins of Glendalough Cathedral, dating from between the 10th and 13th centuries.
The ancient monastic settlement of Glendalough, one of the most beautiful and rugged areas in the whole of County Wicklow, is definitely worth visiting. Glendalough is set beside two mysterious lakes and is surrounded by the lush forests of Glenealo Valley.
