Hotels in Wetherby

Set in a picturesque market town between Leeds and York, Wetherby hotels are surrounded by historical architecture, boutique shops and friendly pubs.

History

Wetherby's position at the midpoint between London and Edinburgh made it an important rest stop for travellers during the 18th century. During the peak of this coaching period, Wetherby had up to 40 inns and alehouses. There are several historical buildings worth seeing in Wetherby, including The Shambles, built in 1811 as ten butchers shops but later converted into a covered market, and St James Church, dating from the 19th century.

One of the oldest structures in Wetherby is Wetherby Bridge, a Grade II-listed ancient monument that spans the River Wharfe and has done for over 700 years. The riverbank is a pleasant location for a stroll and there are a number of companies offering cruises along the river during the warmer spring and summer months.

Gardens

Wetherby is an award-winning floral town and during the spring and summer there are flowers blooming from practically every pot and garden. The Bridgefoot Gardens and Pergola is one of the nicest spots to relax and enjoy finely manicures floral displays as you unwind with a good book or a family picnic. There is a range of other gardens and parks dotted throughout the town, best explored on foot.

Markets and shops

Amble around Wetherby and you'll stumble across charming narrow streets full of boutique shops. There are arguably some of Yorkshire's finest independent fashion shops in Wetherby, and you could very easily spend a whole day drifting from one store to another. If you're looking for most established big name brands Wetherby also has a high street. There is also a weekly market and regular Farmers' Markets where you'll find delicious local produce, including fruit, vegetables, honey and cakes.

Further afield

Head northeast from Wetherby and you'll soon reach York, an ancient city and home to York Minster Cathedral and York Castle. A short drive southwest of Wetherby will instead take you to Leeds, a bustling cosmopolitan city full of shops, restaurants, galleries and pubs.
