There are a number of interesting historical buildings to see in West Malling. St Leonard's Tower makes a dramatic backdrop for family picnics and romantic walks through lush woodland. The tower dates back to 1077 and was built by Bishop Gundulf who was also responsible for building St Mary's Abbey in West Malling and the White Tower of the Tower of London. St Mary's Abbey is still home to Anglican Benedictine Nuns.
There are a number of other historical buildings dotted throughout the town and along the river, including the Prior's House, formerly a home for those with leprosy, and the 18th-century coaching house, The Swan Inn. The Mill Yard Craft Centre is housed in a 16th-century building and contains a number of independent shops and a tearoom.
For a glimpse into the ancient history of the area head to Kit's Coty House and Little Kit's Coty House. The exact purpose of these two megalithic 'dolmen' burial chambers is unknown, although it is thought that they were used as communal burial chambers during the Neolithic period.
