Hotels in West Bay

Located in a small harbour town in West Dorset, West Bay hotels are an excellent place to stay for days on the beach and long walks along the coast.

Beaches

Used as one of the main filming locations for the TV show Broadchurch, West Bay beaches are celebrated for the quality of their waters and feature large stretches of fine shingle. The East Beach extends to the east to Chesil Beach and Portland Bill, while the West Beach is nestled within a protective cove, formed between the harbour's pier and the esplanade.

West Bay is set on the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site that covers the coastline from Exmouth to East Dorset. A walk along the coast takes in 180 million years of geological history, covering the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. The coast is very popular with fossil hunters and if you're lucky you might uncover a trilobite or two during your visit. Even if you're not searching for fossils the coasts are a beautiful area to explore, whether you're travelling with family or planning a romantic getaway.

Bridport Harbour

Away from the beaches you'll find Bridport Harbour, a bustling area with a number of restaurants and pubs. Close to the harbour you'll find riverboats for hire – an ideal way to follow the River Brit upstream as it snakes beside meadows. The harbour is also the location of The Jurassic Pier, a 240m long structure designed to help protect the harbour from sea erosion. The remnants of the demolished West Pier feature an 18th-century ship cannon.

Outdoors

West Bay and the Jurassic Coast feature a variety of walking routes for all ages and levels of ability. If you'd prefer to stay in West Bay, fishing and crabbing are both popular pastimes that can be easily enjoyed in the harbour area. If you're feeling a little more adventurous, divers can get a boat from the harbour to explore the ‘Bay of a Thousand Wrecks' and there are a number of companies offering paragliding experiences around the cliffs.

Further afield

Along the coast to the east you'll find the town of Weymouth, home to a number of seaside shops and restaurants. Travel west from West Bay and you'll soon reach the cosy town of Lyme Regis.
