Hotels in Wengen
Set in the canton of Bern at the foot of the Jungfrau and above the Lauterbrunnen valley, Wengen hotels are a popular destination for mountain tours in summer and skiing holidays in winter.
History
Wengen is a Swiss village with a history that stretches back to the 13th century. It wasn't until the 19th century and the publication of Mary Shelley and Percy Bysshe Shelley's History of a Six Weeks' Tour that the area grew as a popular destination for travellers. Since then, Wengen has become one of the most well-regarded tourist spots in the Jungfrau Region. Although the village attracts visitors from across the globe, Wengen has managed to retain much of its traditional Swiss ambiance and there are a variety of traditional celebrations held around Wengen throughout the year, including the National Costume Festival and the Wengen Cheese Festival.
Summer
During the summer, the area surrounding Wengen is an excellent location for a range of different outdoor sports. Hiking is one of the most popular attractions to the region, with around 500km of footpaths across the Jungfrau Region. One of the best paths from Wengen is the Mendelssohn Path, named after the famous composer Felix Mendelssohn who travelled across Switzerland and drew an iconic sketch of the village in 1842. The path takes approximately three hours to complete and leads from Schiltwald to Wengernalp. Another hike close to Wengen traces the path of the Lauberhorn Downhill Race, extending from Hanegg-Bridge uphill to Lauberhorn.
For mountain bikers with a bit of experience under their belt, there are around 160km of mountain bike trails in the Jungfrau Region. Summer is also a great time for climbing and mountaineering. The Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau are the better-known summits in the area, and for less-experienced climbers the Aletsch glacier is a fantastic place to explore.
Away from the mountains, Wengen is home to a golf course with nine different fairways and stunning views of the Wetterhorn and Eiger mountains. There are also a number of tennis courts, swimming pools and mini golf courses in the area.
Winter
The Jungfrau Region is home to 213km of Ski Slopes, split across the Grindelwald-First, Kleine Scheidegg-Männlichen and Mürren-Schilthorn regions. Whether you're a seasoned skier or a first time snow boarder, there are slopes here for all ages and levels of ability. Aside from skiing and snowboarding, winter hiking is a great way to experience the sublime landscape of the Jungfrau Region and there are over 100km of winter footpaths to use. Sledging is another popular pastime, as is cross-country skiing.
If you'd rather stay warm during the winter, there are a number of spa and wellness centres in the area surrounding Wengen – an ideal chance to take a break from hurling down the slopes and pamper yourself with luxury treatments and massages.
