Hotels in Wendover

Based in a pleasant market town in Buckinghamshire, Wendover Hotels are an excellent place to stay if you're planning to explore the Chiltern Hills and the Aylesbury Vale district.

Once the property of Anne Boleyn, the town of Wendover is a historical destination at the foot of the Chiltern Hills. The name ‘Wendover' means ‘white waters' in the Old Brythonic language of the Celts and relates to the chalk deposits carried along the stream that flows through the middle of the town. One of the most notable historical monuments in the town is the red brick 19th-century clock tower, a distinctive spired structure at the crossroads in the centre of the town, which dates from 1842. The town is also home to a 16th-century timber-framed building, called Chiltern House.

The Chiltern Hills

The Chilterns have been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and feature a sprawling network of trails and paths to explore on foot or on bike. In addition to outdoor activities, the Chilterns feature a variety of impressive country homes. West Wycombe Park is one of the most famous buildings in the area, a short drive from Wendover, close to the village of West Wycombe. The house was built as a pleasure palace for the 18th-century libertine Sir Francis Dashwood and is a fine example of several architectural styles during this period. Sir Francis Dashwood was also responsible for excavating the Hellfire Caves, a series of chalk and flint caverns where Dashwood held meetings with the notorious Hellfire Club.

If you're travelling with kids in tow, the Wendover Woods are an excellent place to explore and feature an adventurous children's play area complete with swings, slides and rope trails. Also in the woods is Go Ape Wendover, a tree-top adventure zone where you'll be able to trek across the wood canopy and enjoy breathtaking views across Aylesbury Vale.

A short drive north from Wendover will take you to the county town of Buckinghamshire, Aylesbury. If you're looking to peruse boutique shops the town is a great location for some retail therapy. Aylesbury also boasts a selection of historical and cultural points of interest, including the 13th and 15th-century King's Head Inn, the Roald Dahl Children's Gallery and Buckinghamshire County Museum.
