Hotels in Warrenpoint

Sitting on the point where Clanrye River and Newry Canal open up into Carlingford Lough, Warrenpoint is a town in County Down, Northern Ireland. With a large town square, Warrenpoint is known for its clubs, bars and restaurants as well as regular events on the square and its lovely beach and seafront. It's the perfect place for a day trip or longer stay, and there are a variety of Warrenpoint hotels available.

History

By the middle of the 19th century, Warrenpoint had grown to be the fifth-largest port in Ireland in terms of imports and exports. A plaque stands in the corner of the town dock which commemorates thousands of emigrants who passed through here in search of a better life in America.

History and legend

Narrow Water Keep lies just outside of Warrenpoint on the County Down bank of the Newry River. It was originally built by Hugh de Lacy, Earl of Ulster, as part of the Norman fortifications in 1212. The castle was destroyed in the 1641 rebellion, however, and the tower house was given into state care in 1956 and is one of the finest 16th-century buildings in Ireland.

The Magennis Coronation Stone stands near a grassy track known as the Bridle Loanen, overlooking the town. Legend says the Magennis clan and its followers would fill the surrounding countryside while the chieftain was inaugurated by placing his foot and staff of power into slots within the stone.

Walking

Walkers will find pleasant strolls both along the beach and seafront of Warrenpoint, as well as within Warrenpoint Park. The park is home to a wonderful array of flowers and shrubs and a fine Edwardian bandstand in which concerts are held during the summer months.

The last bank-holiday weekend of May sees the Blues on the Bay Festival take up residence for three days in Warrenpoint. Featuring quality Blues & Jazz performances and over 25 acts throughout the weekend in selected bars, there are also three main showcase performances featuring top-class international artists.
