Hotels in Warkworth

Warkworth is a charming Northumberland village, best known for its well-preserved medieval castle, church and hermitage. Northumberland is rich in beauty, especially in the nearby Northumberland National Park, and with Warkworth being near the coast, this little village has much to offer in the way of outdoor activities and sightseeing.

Dominated by the magnificent Warkworth Castle at one end of the main street, the ancient village of Warkworth has the church of St Lawrence, with its towering 100-foot spire, at the other.

Warkworth Castle and Hermitage

In this mighty Northumbrian fortress above the River Coquet, you can witness how the Percy family, who wielded almost kingly power in the north, lived in the Duke's Rooms, which were lined with expensive gold-patterned leather. You can then take a relaxing boat trip half a mile down river to the Hermitage, a cave-like building, which was probably a private chapel for the first Earl of Northumberland.

The village

A simply delightful and charming village, you can wander around the artisan shops, restaurants and welcoming inns for the afternoon and enjoy a cone of homemade ice cream from nearby Morwick Dairy, just outside the village. With the river being so close, you can take a riverside stroll or cycle ride, and in the summer months hire a rowing boat or canoe for a relaxing and fun few hours.

The coastline

A 15-minute walk takes you from the village to Warkworth Golf Course and a beautiful sandy beach overlooking the RSPB reserve of Coquet Island. Here you can find activities such as sailing, canoeing, surfing, swimming and fishing.

St Oswald's Way walking route passes through Warkworth, beginning (or ending) at Lindisfarne Holy Island in the north, and ending (or beginning) at Hadrian's Wall in the south – 97 miles in total. You will, however, be able to cut this walk down to a 3-10 mile delightful coastal walk to suit your mood. Holy Island itself, around 36 miles from Warkworth, is a lovely place to visit for its beauty, nature and fascinating religious history.

The great outdoors

Northumberland's wild outdoor spaces are ideal for many adventurous activities. Clay pigeon shooting, flying and gliding, water sports, rock-climbing, paintballing, ballooning and quad biking can all be found, many of them in Northumberland National Park, under an hour's drive away.

Where to eat and drink

The Jackdaw Restaurant on Castle Street has an absolutely excellent local reputation. It has a more fine-dining feel to it than other Warkworth places and it is a small, intimate setting. The warm welcome and service is legendary and the food is excellent, locally sourced and well presented. Remember to book to avoid disappointment.

The Masons Arms on Dial Place is a very friendly and popular pub with traditional hearty meals and a beer garden with plenty of seats. Very pet-friendly both inside and out, a visit here with your pooch comes highly recommended.

Such a delightful spot, Warkworth has much to offer and a range of Warkworth hotels to boot, so book your trip today.
