Hotels in Ware

A large town in Hertfordshire, close to the town of Hertford, Ware is situated to the west of the Prime Meridian Line next to the River Lea. With much heritage and some beautiful countryside, Ware is a great place for a day trip or a longer stay.

History

Ware Museum was established in 1986 and incorporates the town's World War II command bunker used during air raids. Inside the museum there are a number of items including Iron Age and Roman pottery, a Roman coffin and more. There are also interactive experiences which include an archaeological dig for children, a touchscreen kiosk, talking figures and an illuminated satellite picture of Ware. A very interesting afternoon for all.

Place House is a listed medieval manor house in the town with a fine timber roof and a Tudor screen. It was restored in 1978 by the Hertfordshire Building Preservation Trust and opened by the late Queen Mother.

Another listed building in the town is Ware Priory, built as a Franciscan Friary in the 14th century and given to the town in 1920. It now houses the offices of Ware Town Council.

Outdoor fun

Based in one of the most beautiful settings in the area at the rather lovely ‘Three Lakes' Leisure park near Ware, is Top Events GB, activity organisers. Try out the longest zipwire in the region at 150m, archery, shooting, Segways, aerial challenge and much, much more for a fantastic, exhilarating day out.

The Priory has seven acres of riverside grounds, and include a small island. There is Fisherman's Walk, a children's play area, tennis courts, a warm-water open-air swimming pool and bowling green.

There are more pleasant walks along the River Lea, the New River and the rivers Ash and Rib.

East Herts Miniature Railway

This excellent miniature steam railway ride costs only £1 per go. Don't miss the small zoo either...it's free! A lovely afternoon for all the family.

Food and drink

Ware has a great diverse selection of cuisines to suit any palate, and from good old-fashioned English food to Spanish and Turkish delicacies there is something for everyone.

Get a taste of the Mediterranean at Casa Lua, superb Italian food at Amico Di Amici, and sumptuous Greek fare at the Village Taverna. For a warming cup of tea and a slice of cake try The Buttercup Tearoom or Lulu Coffee Company, and for traditional fish and chips head to Andrews Fish Bar.

You'll find a number of superb Ware hotels to use as a base for exploring the town and surrounding area, so planning your trip will be easy.
