Hotels in Waltham Abbey

A market town within the Epping Forest District of Essex, Waltham Abbey is situated between the River Lea and Epping Forest, about 15 miles from the centre of London. This quaint town, full of history and beautiful parks and gardens, interesting boutique shops, excellent pubs and restaurants and more, is the perfect getaway.

History

The magnificent abbey from which the town takes its name has in fact been the site of at least five different buildings. The first was constructed some time in the seventh century and was a wooden church on flint foundations. The third church to be built here was done so at the behest of King Harold II, who later died at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Harold is said to be buried in the grounds of the present abbey.

The Epping Forest District Museum is housed in a Grade II listed Tudor building in the town. The museum tells the story of the local area and the people who have lived and worked here from 100s of years ago, right up until the present day.

Visit the Royal Gunpowder Mills and Museum, where you can learn the secret history of gunpowder, explosives and rocket propellants from various exhibitions. Built on the site of a former gunpowder factory, the museum hosts living history and battle re-enactment events most summer weekends.

Outdoors

Families will love Lee Valley Park Farm with its large variety of animals to meet, greet and cuddle. There are play areas and tractor trailer rides around the working dairy farm. Visitors can enjoy other areas of Lee Valley too, with over 26 miles of traffic-free trails, ideal for walking, cycling or running along. Find various species of wildlife including over 200 recorded bird species at Fisher's Green.

The more adventurous visitor will love a trip to the Lee Valley White Water Centre which offers a range of activities from canoeing and kayaking to white-water rafting, in the same venue that Team GB won their medals during the 2012 Olympics.

Food and drink

There are many wonderful pubs and restaurants in Waltham Abbey, catering to most tastes. The Woodbine Inn is famous for its excellent steaks and local ales, while Tony's Pie-n-Mash serves up a traditional taste of the East End of London.

More traditional English fare can be found in the form of warming and wholesome pub grub at The Black Swan, or perhaps you'd like to try a salt beef sandwich at Pearleys.

There are a number of Waltham Abbey hotels from which to make a base to explore the town and surrounding area, whatever your tastes and budget.
