Hotels in Ventnor
A traditional Victorian seaside town, Ventnor is situated on the south side of the Isle of Wight. The town is officially the highest part of the Isle of Wight and is built into the cliff side. Thanks to the sheltered location of the town, the area has a wonderful microclimate and experiences more sun than other parts of the UK. This climate, coupled with a classic beachfront, traditional promenade and pretty views make the area a fantastic place to visit.
Originally, Ventnor was a small fishing hamlet between two villages, Bonchurch and St Lawrence. In 1866 the Isle of Wight railway made its way to Ventnor and the town soon became a popular tourist resort. The fresh channel air and warm climate were considered to be extremely beneficial to sufferers of tuberculosis and several sanatoriums were established for those suffering from the disease.
Blackgang Chine, around six miles away from Ventnor, is a theme park and gardens with a wide range of fantasy attractions. The park was created in 1843 and is a firm family favourite. With several fantasy play areas such as Cowboy Town, Pirate Cove, Fairyland and Dinosaurland, it's ideal for keeping kids busy and parents relaxed.
Appuldurcombe House is a grand 18th-century house with 11 acres of beautiful grounds and an Owl and Falconry Centre, historic exhibition and souvenir shop.
Easily one of the prettiest spots on the whole of the Isle of Wight, Steephill Cove is a traditional fishing cove with a safe, sandy beach nestled between cliffs and coves. Local eateries serve freshly caught crab and lobster, fishermen land their catches and donkeys carry small children along the deckchair dotted beach. A quiet little area with no road access, this is a tranquil idyll.
There are some outstanding natural beauty spots in this area, ideal for a casual stroll. Coastal walks surrounding Steephill Cove are full of nature and a few little cottages along the way. Take a leisurely stroll through the Botanical Gardens, full of rare plants from around the world thriving in the microclimate, sheltered from the north winds by the protective downlands.
Food and drink
Ventnor has a flurry of wonderful eateries but its true speciality is seafood. Try Fogg's for some of the finest in the area, which also serves up a good steak and BBQ during the summer. The Boathouse Restaurant in Steephill Cove, along with its neighbour, The Crab Shed, serve up freshly caught seafood and specialise in delicious crab.
There are a number of delightful Ventnor hotels from which to choose, to suit your budget and tastes.
