Upminster is an east London suburb, previously part of Essex. It sits close to the Metropolitan Green Belt, and is part of the district of Havering. Upminster is very well connected for public transport, and has a large, modern town centre with all the shops and facilities you'll need.

Things to do in Upminster

The Upminster Windmill is over 200 years old – watch the sails turn on a windy day. You can take a guided tour of the windmill, and there's a great view of your surroundings from the top. Do some more exploring in the Thames Chase Community Forest. The kids can have fun in the Discovery Den or trying to spot owls and other birds.

Take a trip back as far as the Roman times at the 15th-century Tithe Barn, with a Museum of Nostalgia open on certain days throughout the year.

Families can have plenty of fun at Stubbers Adventure Centre. It has outdoor activities, jet skiing, off-road driving, a maze of tunnels to crawl through, and a handy coffee shop at the end.

Visiting London

From Upminster station, you can take the London Underground or national rail services.

The station is in zone six on the District line, acting as the east end of the line. It takes around one hour to get to South Kensington, for the Natural History Museum and the V&A.

Mainline trains run to Fenchurch Street, taking just over 30 minutes. It's then a short walk to the Tower of London, Leadenhall Market or over Tower Bridge to the upscale Shad Thames area.

Shopping and relaxing

The main centre of Upminster is made up of shopping streets, with over 180 shops and restaurants. It's one of the larger town centres in the Havering area.

There are special Italian markets in Upminster during the year. Street performers (such as jugglers and stilt walkers) and food stalls come out in force, and there's usually an Italy themed competition to win prizes.

After a day exploring or shopping, take a break at one of the town's beauty spas and nail salons. There's also the Essex Yeoman pub on the main road for a relaxing drink and a spot of lunch.
