Hotels in Ulverston
The market town of Ulverston is close to both the Lake District and Morecambe Bay. It's also bordered by Coniston Water, the District's third-largest lake. The old buildings and cobbled streets add to the town's charm and quieter atmosphere. Ulverston is twinned with Albert in France, and teams from both towns come together to play football at Easter.
Things to see and do in Ulverston
The town's main landmark is the Hoad Monument, built to commemorate local man Sir John Barrow. It's a Grade II listed building and a regional point of interest.
Of all of Ulverston's famous residents, possibly the most iconic was Stan Laurel. He was born in the town, and there is a plaque and a statue dedicated to him.
For a fortnight in April and May, the town is covered in flags for the Ulverston Flag Festival. The flags are made by hand, many with designs and symbols representing the building they're attached to. Ulverston calls itself a ‘festival town', as there are close to 20 festivals held here each year.
The mile-long Ulverston Canal was used to make Ulverston into a port town in the 18th century. It's no longer used, yet is still a popular site to walk around. There's a public swing bridge at one end.
Morecambe Bay is an hour's drive away, around the coast and passing by Lake Windermere. It's said that the tide on the bay is ‘as fast as a horse can run'. Ulverston hotels are ideal bases for making a day trip to the bay or further along to Lancaster.
When the tide is out the sand covers 120 miles, making it the largest expanse of sandy beach in England. The Way of the Roses cycle route starts from Morecambe Bay, running to Bridlington Bay in Yorkshire.
Ulverston has some big chain stores and brands, yet the independent shops still stand out for their friendly welcome and individual offerings. The town's sense of humour can be seen in the Vinyl Countdown record shop and Floral & Hardy, the florists.
Ulverston Market Hall is open five days a week, with shops selling everything from toys and sweets to DVDs, pet food and antiques.
