Hotels in Troyes
Around 93 miles south of Paris, alongside the river Seine, you'll find the town of Troyes in the region of Champagne-Ardenne. It's been a settlement since Roman times, as the hub between several major roads and highways. Today, modern influences mingle with older architecture – the Musée d'Art Moderne collection has been sourced by owners of fashion brand Lacoste.
Sightseeing in Troyes
Troyes describes itself as ‘the city of a thousand colours'. Many of the houses are decorated in shades of pink and yellow.
Throughout the town, a number of old half-timbered houses are still standing. Some of them date as far back as the 16th century, built to restore Troyes after a fire in 1524. Look at them closely – the floors aren't quite level.
The Cathedralé St-Pierre-et-St-Paul-de-Troyes is one of France's national monuments. Built in the Gothic style near the turn of the 13th century, it's known for the beauty of its stained glass windows.
A local speciality is the andoulette, a type of sausage made with pork, peppers, onions and wine. The ‘Troyes' version is the type you're most likely to find in French supermarkets.
Look out for a special bus travelling around town. This unusual take on street food is Claire et Hugo, serving burgers and ‘frites' from a double-decker. It's usually outside Troyes train station on Thursdays and Fridays.
Snack on cheese, bread and fruits at the Marche des Halles covered market. It's open every day of the week, and times vary.
The Champagne region
Stay in one of the conveniently-placed Troyes hotels if you're planning to go on a wine tasting. Overall, the Aube region represents a quarter of France's annual champagne production. Troyes itself doesn't have champagne cellars – you'll need to make the half-hour drive to Côte des Bar.
The Côte des Bar area has a champagne route covering 136 miles, clearly signposted along the roads. Drive through sleepy villages and past lush forests to find independent chateaux and true masters of their craft.
If you arrive at a winery in September without booking a tasting in advance, you may be roped in to help harvest the grapes. Go during the last few days of July to catch the local champagne festival.
