Hotels in Troon
On Scotland's western coast, Troon is a port town in Ayrshire. It's close to ferry services and the airport, making it both a popular destination and stopover. As such, the choice of Troon hotels is quite wide considering the town's relatively small size. Troon is also where you'll find one of the most popular 4-star hotels in the whole of Ayrshire, Piersland House.
Visiting Scotland
Troon is only about three miles from Glasgow Prestwick International Airport. Ferries run to and from the town and Larne in County Antrim, Northern Ireland.
You can also get around via Troon rail station, which is on the line between Ayr, Glasgow Central and Edinburgh. Trains stop at the airport station on the way to Ayr.
If you're in the mood for a stroll, try a section of the Ayrshire Coastal Walking Path. Just follow the path leading north from the North Bay in Troon – taking a map is advised. Head for Irvine, roughly six miles away, and just before you get there you'll see a large stone dragon asleep on a hill.
Things to do in Troon
Watch famous golfers tee off at Royal Troon golf course, which is used during the Open Golf Championships. It's one of seven golf courses in the local area.
Troon Beach is the main attraction in summer, with a pedestrianised esplanade running all the way along the curved bay. Nearby Troon Yacht Haven is great for holidaymakers visiting on boats. It has restaurants, a kids' play area and pretty Italian gardens.
At the harbour and the beach, you can look out to the Isle of Arran and the Ailsa Craig rock formation. The ferry to Arran leaves from Ardrossan, which is a 30-minute drive away. The crossing itself takes just under an hour.
Shopping and souvenirs
Shops are clustered near the train station, and you can pick up a new outfit and a weekly food shop on the same street. There are several gift shops for souvenirs and seaside sticks of rock.
The nearest major shopping centre is Heathfield Retail Park, next to the airport. It has parking for 800 cars, and KFC and Pizza Hut are both there if you get peckish.
