Hotels in Thurso
Thurso is an ancient town in the Highlands of Scotland. It is the northernmost town on the British mainland and as such, Thurs hotels offer a scenic base from which to visit the islands of Orkney and Shetland.
This part of Scotland is all about its stunning natural beauty, and the best way to see it is on foot. There are plenty of good hikes in the area around Thurso but one of the best is probably from the town to Holburn Head.
If you start at Thurso Beach and head west past the harbour, you will reach the Scrabster Lighthouse. From here there are stunning views of the Orkneys and Dunnet Head.
As you follow the marked path, you will pass through pebble beaches, green pastures and dramatic cliff faces, until you reach the truly jaw-dropping scenery of Holburn Head.
For those who like to immerse themselves even more literally in their surroundings, Thurso is also a great place for surfing, especially during the summer. Thurso Beach is wide and gets some great waves. Thurso Surf School offers classes and gear rental to those of all abilities.
Thurso is just a short drive from Scrabster and from here you can get the ferry to beautiful Stromness on the mainland of Orkney. The Orkney Islands are brimming with historical attractions and incredible landscapes.
Of particular note are its Neolithic sites, which together constitute the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are also many boat trip tours of the archipelago that focus on its marine and birdlife riches.
