The Thomas Paine Hotel
Hotels in Thetford
Thetford is probably best known for being the birthplace of the famous political figure Thomas Paine, who, in the late 18th century, inspired the rebels of the colonies of British America to seek independence from the Crown. The attractive market town was probably an exclusive royal settlement before the invasion of William the Conqueror, and was once dominated by a large Norman castle.
The Ancient House Museum of Thetford Life
A charming Tudor building, the Ancient House Museum of Thetford Life explores the life of Thomas Paine, who is often considered the 'father of the American Revolution'. The venue, now Grade I Listed, contains an extensive collection of artefacts on the history and growth of the town, and was founded in 1924.
The Thetford Hoard
Now housed at the British Museum, the Thetford Hoard, which is also known locally as the 'Thetford Treasure', includes more than 20 gold finger rings, more than 30 silver spoons, and several other ancient jewellery items that were designed in the 4th century. The jewellery was not discovered until 1979, however, although it is one of the most important late-Roman British metal collections in existence.
Other museums
You can also visit the Charles Burrell Museum, which tells the story of the famous Charles Burrell Works, a company that produced world-renowned steam-powered engines and was once a major employer. The Dad's Army Museum, meanwhile, celebrates one of Britain's most successful comedies, Dad's Army, which was filmed in the town, depicted as 'Walmington on Sea', between 1967 and 1977.
