This attractive Berkshire community witnessed a significant population increase in the late 20th century and has been inhabited since the prehistoric era. Thatcham was already an affluent town by the late Middle Ages, and was connected to the Kennet and Avon Canal in the 18th century.

Highclere Castle

Approximately ten miles from Thatcham, Highclere Castle is a splendid Jacobethan country mansion that surrounds 5000 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds that were designed by the renowned landscaper Lancelot 'Capability' Brown.

The Grade I listed house was built in the early Victorian period and is noted for its elaborate Renaissance-style features and unique square design, and is now a major tourist attraction. The Newbury Racecourse
