Hotels in Stranraer

Stranraer is a pretty Scottish coastal town that has been populated since the Roman times. It's a great place to visit if you want to explore Scotland.

Stranraer hotels are available at a good range of prices to suit most budgets with lots of options from quaint cottages to large country hotels.

Scottish Beaches

Being a coastal town, Stranraer has lots of beaches for you to enjoy. Ardwell Bay is an exciting beach to visit as it's renowned for being a great place to find fossils. You should definitely keep your eyes peeled, you never know what you might find.

Another piece of Scottish coastline you really shouldn't miss is Corsewell Point. The Point offers magnificent views of the ocean and on a clear day you can see all the way to Ireland. Corsewell Point also has its own lighthouse which was built in 1815 and is still functioning today. The lighthouse has a hotel and restaurant at its base, so you can grab a bite to eat while you take in the stunning views.

Local History

Scotland is a country with a very rich history and it's very visible in Stranraer. The Castle of St John is located in the centre of the town and was built in 1510. The castle is well worth a visit and has special video exhibitions used to tell its unique history.

Stranraer is also home to the North West Castle which is much more modern and was built in 1820. Today the castle is a hotel and is unique in that it's the first hotel in the world to have its own indoor curling rink. The town also has its own museum which can be found in the Old Town Hall. The museum has lots of exhibits on local history as well as information about two local men who became polar explorers.

The nearby town of Dumfries is also an interesting place. The town is home to the Robert Burns Centre which is a cinema dedicated to the famous Scottish poet Robbie Burns. The building contains many original documents that belonged to the poet as well as a model of the town of Dumfries. The cinema also has its own book shop where you can pick up some of his work. Of course the Centre also shows an interesting selection of films ranging from indie releases to Hollywood blockbusters.
