Hotels in Stonehaven

Surrounded by beautiful Scottish hills, derelict castles and the dramatic North Sea, the coastal town of Stonehaven is a striking place to visit.

Originally an Iron Age fishing village, Stonehaven is now a modern bustling town which means that Stonehaven hotels offer a variety of accommodation to suit most budgets.

Scottish Castles

Scotland is world-renowned for its castles and Stonehaven has its own castle that will not disappoint. Dunnottar castle stands at the edge of the town on a windswept cliff top jutting out to sea. It's a spectacular place for you to take a few holiday snaps. It's all the more thrilling as it hasn't been turned into a tourist attraction with no attached museum or gift shop (make sure you take a torch to explore some of its unlit chambers).

If Dunnottar castle leaves you wanting to see even more of Scotland's castles then a fantastic way to do just that is Scotland's Castle Trail. Dunnottar is only the first of 17 further castles for you to discover as you make your way along the trail.

Sea Wildlife

As Stonehaven is a harbour town it's a brilliant place for you to explore the North Sea and its unique wildlife. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds runs two-hour guided boat trips which take in the sea cliffs and all their rare feathery inhabitants such as Puffins and Razorbill. You may even be lucky enough to spot a few dolphins.

If you're visiting in the summer and fancy taking to the water yourself, a great place to visit is the Stonehaven Open Air Pool. The pool is Olympic-sized and is unusual in that it's full of heated sea water.

Restaurants

Stonehaven has a great selection of restaurants and cafes for you to choose from. One great place to try is the Captains table Restaurant located in The Ship Inn. The restaurant offers a wide range of freshly cooked food with locally caught fresh fish a speciality. If you prefer just a light snack then Maggie Mays Coffee Shop is a family run business serving freshly made cakes.

Golf

If you're a keen golfer then Stonehaven really is the perfect place for you to visit. Founded in 1888 the Stonehaven Golf Club is perched on the cliffs overlooking the sea and offers spectacular views as a backdrop while you play. The course is 18 holes and has a special feature in that one of the bunkers on the course was created by a German bomb dropped in 1940.
