Hotels in Staines

Staines is a town on the River Thames in Surrey, England, now officially named Staines-on-Thames. Until the mid 1960s it was in the historic county of Middlesex. 17 miles from the centre of London, Staines lies on the edge of the Green Belt.

History

There has been a crossing on the River Thames here since Roman times, although evidence of human habitation stretches as far back as the Neolithic era at Staines Moor. Within a decade of the first Roman invasion there was a bridge linking Londinium to Silchester, and the Roman's knew this place as Pontes, or ‘Bridges'. A number of historically significant events have occurred at Staines, such as an assembly of the Barons before meeting King John at Runnymede in 1215 and the trial of Thomas More that took place in a public house here, away from the plague-ridden capital. Its position on the vital ancient river crossing means that numerous Kings and Queens will have passed this way through the ages.

Until the mid-19th century the parish of Staines remained mostly agricultural, with the town a regular staging post with coaching inns. Linoleum manufacture saw a successful industrial phase develop in the 1860s and a bronze statue of two lino workers in the High Street commemorates this trade today. The Lagonda car factory was also situated nearby.

Today, Staines is a busy thriving place with excellent pedestrianised shopping facilities, and convenient proximity to Heathrow and the M25 Motorway. Many major organisations such as Bupa, Siemens and Samsung have major sites or HQs in the town.

As a bustling centre with lots of diverse visitors, Staines Restaurants cater for every taste.
