Hotels in Spalding
Situated on the River Welland in the South Holland district of Lincolnshire, Spalding, known as ‘The Heart of the Fens' is a traditional market town with historical links to the production of tulips. There were once huge summer parades here to celebrate the cultural links between the English fenland and both the landscape and people of South Holland.
History
During the Roman period, this part of Lincolnshire was used for salt production, as shown by archaeological evidence discovered at Wygate Park. The actual name is derived from an ancient Anglian tribe, the Spaldingas, who settle here in the 6th century. For many centuries, Spalding thrived on the incredibly rich agriculture that surrounds it, especially once the river was made navigable into the town for larger vessels and the railway arrived. The River Welland defines Spalding to this day, with much lively development along its banks, where fishing is still very popular.
The Water Taxi
In 2005 the Spalding Water Taxi service was launched. The route flows from just off Spalding High Street upstream before turning into the Coronation Channel, opened in 1953, and then to Springfield's Outlet Shopping & Festival Gardens. This trip has become very popular with visitors and is an excellent way to see the town's Georgian Terraces and tree-lined waterways.
Cuisine
This area has always upheld its culinary traditions and recipes. Long before ideas of local sustainability and seasonal menus became fashionable they were the heart and soul of Lincolnshire cuisine. From the award-winning tangy Lincolnshire Poacher cheese, to those famous course-ground, sage flavoured sausages and succulent marbled Lincoln Red Beef you will encounter wholesome and delicious English food in a variety of fine restaurants and old inns. Pop into a cosy tearoom to sample some moreish Lincolnshire plum bread, made with dried fruit, brown sugar, cinnamon, eggs and tea!
On the banks of the River Welland, just five minutes walk from Spalding hotels, is the Cley Hall Hotel Restaurant. Housed in a magnificent Georgian Manor House, it provides a mouth-watering selection of fine Lincolnshire treats in very elegant surroundings. By the entrance of Springfield's Outlet Shopping & Festival Gardens is The Kitchen, where you can enjoy home cooked, locally sourced food from breakfast until dinner.
