Hotels in Slough

The second-largest town in Berkshire, Slough has interesting museums and lovely countryside close by – and it's one of the most ethnically diverse towns in the UK.

Slough has 96 listed buildings, including St Laurence's Church, which dates from the 12th century. The tower, the outside walls, the font and a piscina survive from Norman times, and the astronomer and composer Sir William Herschel, who discovered Uranus, is buried here.

Museums

Discover the history of the town at Slough Museum, which is free to enter. Its collection of more than 11,000 objects and photographs encompasses themes including agriculture, entertainment, communications, costume, domestic life, education, food and medicine.

Eton College has amassed a huge collection of historic artefacts since it was founded in 1440, including an internationally important collection of books and manuscripts and an art collection. There's also a natural history museum with more than 16,000 items on themes including Thames Valley wildlife, evolution and ecology. All these collections can be seen by appointment, and the museum, which is free, is also open on Sunday afternoons.

Parks

The Grade II listed Herschel Park, which has been awarded a Green Flag, was laid out in 1842 and retains some of its Victorian features. There is a lake, a picnic area and a nature reserve with a wildflower meadow, as well as several trails for families. Look out for foxes, muntjac deer, squirrels, field voles and the 300-year-old horse chestnut tree. Birdwatchers might see Canada geese, kestrels, green woodpeckers and even a Cetti's warbler.

The 500-acre Black Park country park is a mixture of woodland, heathland and open space. There are more than 10 miles of tracks for walking and cycling, as well as plenty of bridle paths, an adventure play area and a lake popular with model boaters.

Windsor Castle

The oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world, Windsor Castle has been the family home of British kings and queens for almost 1,000 years. There is much to see, including the magnificent State Apartments and the Semi-State rooms, the private apartments created for George IV. Other attractions include Queen Mary's Dolls' House, believed to be the largest dolls' house in the world, and St George's Chapel, where Henry VIII and Charles I are buried. You might also get to see the Changing of the Guard.

Eating and drinking

Slough's popular restaurants include Kai's Oriental Restaurant, a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence winner, and Panjab. Here, interesting twists on traditional Indian food include mashed potato pakorah and beer-battered chicken pakorah. Mr Todiwala's Kitchen, another Certificate of Excellence winner, offers a street-food-influenced à la carte menu as well as a two-hour tasting menu. For homecooked pub classics, a kids' menu, an extensive dessert menu and a beer garden, head to the Duke's Head in Farnham Royal, also a Certificate of Excellence winner.
