Hotels in Sleaford

Set in a market town on the River Slea and Sleaford Canal, Sleaford hotels offer access to historical buildings and flat fenland countryside, and are within easy reach of Lincoln and the coast.

History

Sleaford has a rich history dating as far back as the Anglo Saxon period in 852. There are a number of medieval buildings still standing in Sleaford, the most impressive of which is St Denys' Church. The church dates back to the late 12th and early 13th centuries and features one of the earliest examples of a stone broach spire in England. The church dominates the skyline of Sleaford, is impressive to see from the outside and even more impressive from the inside. If you enter the church you'll see an altar rail that was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and originally belonged to Lincoln Cathedral. Opposite St Denys' Church is Carre's Hospital, a set of 17th-century almshouses.

Also worth checking out if you're visiting Sleaford is the 19th-century Grade II listed Navigation House, which currently houses an exhibition on the history of the building, and Heckington Windmill, built in 1830 and currently the only working eight-sailed windmill in the England.

Culture

Sleaford is home to The National Centre for Craft & Design, which holds England's largest exhibition space for craft and design and includes spaces for galleries, workshops, talks and other events for both kids and adults. Check out the centre's calendar to find out what exhibitions are on during your stay. If you'd prefer to see some live performance, The Playhouse boasts a variety of community theatre events as well as stand-up comedy and live music.

Further afield

If you're travelling with a car Sleaford makes an excellent base for exploring the local area. A short trip north from the town will take you to the historical city of Lincoln. In addition to a variety of high street shops, restaurants and pubs, Lincoln is home to the ancient Lincoln Castle and one of the most impressive religious buildings in the country, Lincoln Cathedral. If you drive east from Sleaford you'll soon reach the coast and the popular seaside resort of Skegness.
