The history of Selby can be traced back to the town's roots as a Viking settlement. This long history means that there are a number of historical sites dotted throughout the area. The building was founded in 1069 by Benedict of Auxerre and functioned as an important abbey until the dissolution of the monasteries. One of the most interesting aspects of the abbey is the 15th-century Washington Window, including the heraldic arms of the ancestors of George Washington. The three stars above red and white stripes are said to be one of the main influences of the US flag.
