History

The history of Selby can be traced back to the town's roots as a Viking settlement. This long history means that there are a number of historical sites dotted throughout the area. King Henry I is reputed to have been born in the town in around 1069, the Civil War-era Battle of Selby took place in the town and the area was also renowned for ship building throughout the 19th century.

Selby is home to one of the few surviving abbey churches of the medieval period, Selby Abbey. The building was founded in 1069 by Benedict of Auxerre and functioned as an important abbey until the dissolution of the monasteries. After the dissolution the abbey suffered from disrepair and large amounts of destruction until Sir George Gilbert Scott renovated it during the 19th century. One of the most interesting aspects of the abbey is the 15th-century Washington Window, including the heraldic arms of the ancestors of George Washington. The three stars above red and white stripes are said to be one of the main influences of the US flag.
