Hotels in Santander

On the dramatic northern coast of Spain, this majestic port, which is the capital of the scenic Cantabria region, is known for its irresistible sandy beaches and has been inhabited since at least the Roman Empire. Much greener than many of Europe's Mediterranean resorts, Santander is overlooked by an enchanting Gothic cathedral, and offers regular ferry services to several ports on the English South Coast.

In the 19th century, Santander became a sought-after holiday destination for many wealthy Spaniards, from aristocrats to political figures, and is still a favoured resort for many Spanish families, although it also welcomes many visitors from northern Europe.

The Cathedral

Known in Spanish as the 'Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Santander', Santander Cathedral was built from the 12th to the 14th century, although a church had existed at this site several hundred years earlier. Observe the remarkable Baroque architecture of the Cathedral-Basilica, see the Church of the Christ (Iglesia del Cristo), and visit the trapezoidal-shaped cloister, which is more than 600 years old.

The Palacio de la Magdalena

An icon of Santander for more than a century, the Palacio de la Magdalena was an exclusive royal retreat until the the beginning of the Second Spanish Republic in the 1930s, and contains a unique blend of local, French and English architectural influences. The building is now a sought-after wedding venue, and offers wonderful views of the sandy beach and the surrounding coastal landscape.

Other sights

Visit the breathtaking Magdalena Peninsula next to the Bay of Santander and enjoy more phenomenal panoramic views of the turquoise shores of the Bay of Biscay and the lush woodlands and white sands.
