This charismatic seaside resort, also known as Saltburn-by-the-Sea, rose to prominence after the expansion of the local railway network in the Victorian period, and is revered for its beautifully preserved Italian Gardens.

Once notorious for its smuggling, Saltburn was home to numerous grand houses by the second half of the 19th century, one of the most famous of which is the Zetland Hotel, which is known for its charming Italianate features and is one of the most deluxe Saltburn hotels.

The Saltburn Cliff Lift

This spectacular funicular railway is Britain's oldest water-balanced cliff lift still in operation, and offers outstanding views of the beach and the North Sea. The Saltburn Cliff Lift began operation in the 1880s, and has been managed by the local council since the mid-20th century.

The Saltburn Miniature Railway

The perfect family attraction, the Saltburn Miniature Railway runs from the Italian Gardens to the sea front, and marked its 50th anniversary in 1997. In later years, the line closed, although it was reopened in 2003 and is now open to the public regularly.

Places nearby

Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2013, the Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum showcases the history of the local mining industry and its role in the rapid growth of the Redcar and Cleveland area in the 19th century. You can also visit Winkies Castle, which is in the nearby village of Marske-by-the-sea and exhibits thousands of artefacts related to local history, although it is actually a small old half cruck cottage.
