Hotels in Saffron Walden
Saffron Walden, a delightful medieval Essex town, has held a regular market for well over 850 years and is celebrated for its high concentration of historic independent shops. This area of Essex has probably been inhabited since at least the Neolithic era, and became an important defence after the invasion of William the Conqueror.
A famous former resident of Saffron Walden is the successful writer Gabriel Harvey, who was born here in the mid-16th century and produced numerous Latin works, meeting Queen Elizabeth I in 1578.
Walden Castle
The Normans were responsible for the construction of Walden Castle, which was designed in the mid-12th century but was slighted, by the orders of King Henry II, soon after its completion. However, it is still possible to witness the ruins of the castle today, which is preserved as a Grade I Listed structure and is open throughout the year.
The Saffron Walden Museum
An award-winning venue, the Saffron Walden Museum is fun for people of all ages and contains a special Ancient Egypt exhibition, an impressive collection of Saxon artefacts, and plenty of other intriguing historical items. In fact, the museum is one of the oldest in the country, and is within walking distance of several Saffron Walden hotels.
Audley End House and Gardens
Next to Saffron Walden, Audley End House is a spectacular example of Jacobean architecture, and is surrounded by superb landscaped grounds that were designed by the distinguished Georgian landscape Lancelot 'Capability' Brown. This majestic mansion was completed by the 1st Earl of Suffolk, Thomas Howard, in 1614, and was expanded in the 1780s, after which the house and gardens changed very little.
