Hotels in Rochester

Quaint and picturesque, Rochester is a charming destination with lots to discover from grand historic sights to buzzing tourist hotspots, making it the ideal setting for a fun getaway.

Nestled on the River Medway in Kent, Rochester has a long history as an important administrative centre throughout the centuries and various occupations, including the Romans. And it was even a favourite destination for Charles Dickens who lived close by in Gads Hill Place, and based many of his novels in Rochester.

Today, the city is still a vibrant place to spend a few days, packed with lively restaurants, bars and great shopping hotspots.

Places to see

There are a couple of ancient landmarks well worth making a trip to in Rochester. The Normans built Rochester Cathedral, and this grand building is still an impressive sight to this day. And the 11th-century Rochester Castle is a brilliantly preserved fortress.

If you like the idea of soaking up the city's past, you should definitely make time for The Restoration House too. This stately mansion is a combination of two medieval buildings and you can even grab a spot of afternoon tea after wandering around the house and grounds.

Or, to completely relax, head down to the picturesque Vines Park and wander through the wooded paths, or kick back under the shade of a tree with a drink.

Places to eat and stay

For a traditional tearoom, look no further than Mrs. Tickit's Pantry. It's a lovely spot to take time out. For a bigger meal, try some Middle Eastern dishes at Café Moroc or contemporary British at TOPES Restaurant.

When it comes to making yourself feel at home, choose a traditional and characterful Rochester hotel to soak up the atmosphere in. The Gordon House Hotel is popular, along with B&B's like the Orchard Cottage or Cedar House.
