Hotels in Ramsgate
A popular seaside town in east Kent, Ramsgate was one of the great holiday resorts of the Victorian Era. A historic port, Ramsgate is home to one of the largest marinas on the south coast of England and has provided cross channel ferries for many years. It's also home to a stunning Royal Harbour, the only one in the UK. With a rich maritime history, lively shopping area and regular traditional market as well as excellent dining, Ramsgate is the perfect place for a relaxing break.
Ramsgate has its own Meridian Line, and a large inscription beneath the harbour clock tower states that Ramsgate Mean Time is 5 minutes and 41 seconds ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. Although it is the only local time zone in the UK officially recognised by Greenwich, Ramsgate abandoned RMT in favour of GMT at around 1928. Certain celebrations, for example the Millennium celebration firework display, do not occur at the same time as the rest of the country, but rather 5 minutes and 41 seconds earlier.
The Ramsgate Maritime Museum is home to a number of artefacts covering the town's rich heritage of fishing, shipbuilding and shipwrecks, and is also the site of the Meridian. Four galleries of exhibits tell the story of the maritime history of the area with permanent displays.
Take a tour through the Ramsgate Tunnels, a network of deep shelter tunnels linking to a former railway tunnel, built to provide shelter for 60,000 people during WWII. Explore the tunnels and experience how local people sheltered and lived in a town beneath a town.
For a different slice of history, visit The Micro Museum which tells the story of the history and ideas that led to the invention of the home computer. The museum is home to a unique collection of vintage personal computers, calculators, games and microelectronics.
Countryside and nature
During the summer months, boat trips take visitors out on fishing excursions or wildlife trips to spot seals on the Goodwin Sands. Hire your own boat and discover gorgeous beaches and bays, or view the Thanet Offshore Windfarm's 100 turbines.
Walking trails run from portside all the way to the cliffs where hikers can walk the coastal path to Broadstairs, or head south on the beautiful Saxon Shore Way to spot birds and wildlife at Pegwell Bay Country Park.
Food and drink
You can expect to find a great deal of seafood in Ramsgate, and the harbour's cafés with their chairs and SEOSITE_LEVEL_DESCRIPTIONs outdoors are the perfect place to relax and watch the world go by.
Visit The Corner House restaurant for high quality British food made from locally sourced produce and served in relaxed surroundings. This beautiful looking eatery offers everything from a bar snack to a full evening meal.
