Hotels in Porto Cristo

Porto Cristo is a small peaceful town situated on the east coast of Mallorca, about 40 miles east of the capital, Palma. The town was probably named, ‘Port of Christ' in 1260 at the time of the earliest Christian arrivals on the island. It sits at the end of a long and sheltered inlet.

Landmarks

Although a popular centre for visitors, Porto Cristo is low-key and authentic: it's still very much a Spanish fishing village. Nearby Manacor is well known for the creation of high quality furniture and for being part of Mallorca's famous imitation pearl industry. The main feature of Porto Cristo is its large natural harbour, which has long been a safe haven for fishing boats and more recently has become ideal mooring for leisure craft. The beach is pretty, family friendly and lapped by the blue-green Mediterranean.

The Caves

Although Porto Cristo hotels are usually bathed by Mallorcan sunshine, one of the top local attractions is subterranean. The Cuevas del Drach or Dragon Caves are fascinating, and within this complex you will find the cavern containing the beautiful Lake Martel, which is large enough to host classical concerts on most evenings! Nearby there are the slightly more modest caves of Coves del Hams, named after the Mallorcan word for fishhooks due to the strange shape of the stalactites and stalagmites here.

Restaurants and Cafés

In keeping with the relaxed nature of Porto Cristo, the cafés and restaurants are low-key and welcoming. El Patio enjoys an excellent beachside location and spacious open dining area. Sa Pedra Bar & Restaurant has the essential terrace overlooking the yachts in the harbour, and offers a good mix of hearty traditional fish and meat dishes. A short stroll from the harbour on a pedestrianised street is Roland Restaurant, with its crisp contemporary interior and nice small terrace. The owner, Roland Schulte has perfected his skills in a number of highly respected restaurants on the island and is dedicated to using seasonal ingredients. A typical main course might be fillet of sea bass with tandoori vegetables and green curry sauce, or Mallorcan duck, Savoy cabbage and potato gratin.
